2nd Grade

Mrs. Swanson's 2nd Grade class wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!  The first semester has been a busy one with lots of learning!  Here are some of the highlights:

Religion - We have been learning about the Saints, King David, and Advent.  Students worked hard on their Saint project which included puppets and reports on their assigned Saint.

Reading - Students have read many entertaining stories from their basal.  Congratulations to several students who have met their A.R. goals!  Keep reading!  We have been writing to famous children's authors and illustrators.  So far we have written to Steven Kellogg, James Howe, and Norman Bridwell.  Our next Author of the Month will be Eric Carle.

Phonics - long and short vowels, consonant digraphs

English - Parts of speeches, Shurley jingles, classifying sentences, practice and improving sentences, nouns, and verbs

Social Studies - Our Earth, We also look forward to Mrs. Cobb teaching our J.A. classes starting January 11th.

Science - We have had so much fun learning about plants, animals, and space!  We made constellations, learned the names of the planets, the moon and its phases, and the sun!

Math - Addition, Subtraction facts, fact families, place-value, greater than, and less than.  Students are so excited to start multiplication.  They are now studying for their 2's.

Spelling - long and short vowel sounds, consonant digraphs

Handwriting - Students have been hard at work on their manuscript letters.  We have started cursive and are working hard on that!

Please check out the wonderful t-shirts the students did for their book reports!  What a great job and very creative!!!

Thank you to everyone for the nice Christmas gifts!  I am truly blessed!  Here's to a great 2nd semester and 2012!!
